I distinctly said Diet.
"Medium fries, a double cheeseburger, and a small diet Pepsi, please. I've got coupons."
"That'll be $1.09."
Everything tasted weird- the fries were having an off day(tasting like a chemical), the burger was blah and the drink just couldn't be explained. Or (I thought) the drink tasting weird was because of the food...Bolus for everything but the drink.
1.5 hours later, HI. I take a shot, because I think it is my infusion set's problem but within an hour the shot drops me to 425 + I deduce that it must be the drink,I could not have gotten diet. Much later, when I'm 288 and take a corrective bolus it drops me nicely to where I'm supposed to be, no resistance problems. And that would be highly unusual, to spike 400 points on pure caffeine alone.(I've spiked about 100 before) I think I didn't get diet, I think I got something else.
(just lucky for me I didn't get the large drink or I'd have gone into DKA)
I think I should get some diastix and start testing(for sugar) every(restaurant) drink from here on out, nothing is more scary then a blood sugar gone HI.

That sucks, big time. No two ways about it.
I just had this happen over the weekend too! I've gotten in the habit of sipping my drinks first to check, but you can never be 100% sure. Thinking of getting some stix myself as a precaution.
I'm the drink taster for Riley. He's only 6 so anytime we go to a restaurant he knows not to drink his drink until I've tasted it first.
I sometimes wonder about when he's older and I'm not around to taste for him.
I'm planning to start using Diastix. Last weekend I had a soda that was questionable. I drank some, and then watched my CGM to see if it did anything. After about 45 minutes, I decided it was safe and I drank it, but it was gross and watery by then.
Heidi, I seem to have lost your email address. I wanted to say thank you for the insulin. I really appreciate your generosity!
Welcome to the old school. I remember testing drinks with Diastix when I was diagnosed >20 years ago. Old methods still stand the test of time, I see.
One thing that I always do when ordering (fast food and sit down) is ONLY say 'diet', not diet coke or diet pepsi, etc. Far too often the person taking the order only hears Coke or Pepsi and that is what you get.
Secondly, as much as we would like to blame the person behind the counter for screwing up the order, I have had occasions when the drink dispenser was not hooked up to the right canister and the diet fountain was pouring regular soda. I always watch the person fill my cup when ordering at fast food and they have the fountain behind the counter.
At least you were able to correct the problem.
Peace+
Tim
